Visitors to the Catlins are encouraged to stay in the Holiday Parks, Department of Conservation camping grounds or other designated areas. This handy brochure and poster have helpful information including address details of the camping grounds and a map.
The Catlins Summer Programme 2018
The Catlins Summer Programme offers walks, talks, wildlife experiences, fossil hunts, local history, films, children’s activities and more. This programme has been organised by South Otago Forest & Bird in conjunction with the Department of Conservation and the Catlins Historical Society.

Owaka is very excited to be the host town of the Otago Goldfields Heritage Trust (OGHT) Cavalcade next year. The various Cavalcade Trails (Riding, Wagons, Walking & new Bicycle’s) will be coming into Owaka on Saturday, 3rd March 2018 for Grand Parade, Family Entertainment & Market day followed by Evening dinner & Hoe Down at Owaka Sports Grounds.. plus Breakfast the next day! Cavalcade Trails will have various start locations around Otago & Southland… All will be Finishing in Owaka on the 3rd March 2018: taking in "Catlin’s Bush & Beach".
There will be all new trails, and some new trail bosses into Owaka next year. The actual Cavalcade trails information & registrations are available on the Otago Goldfields Heritage Trust (OGHT) Cavalcade website. The new strategy is an updated revised version of the original 2004 Catlins Tourism Strategy, developed in partnership by creating a ‘working team’ with Venture Southland, Catlins Coast Inc. and the Tourism Catlins charitable Trust with input from Catlins Community Promotions Groups. Mar - Papatowai Challenge
The Papatowai Challenge is a pre-season fun run and walk from a holiday home in the Catlins. It is
signposted at the south end of Tahakopa River Bridge Papatowai. Runners must be 13 years & over.
Papatowai is located approximately two hours from Dunedin and twenty-five minutes south of Owaka.
The Southern Scenic Route is now fully sealed. The Papatowai Challenge is run over the measured distance of 15.5 km and is over a varied scenic
course of well formed bush tracks, beach running and local roads.
