Update on the 2010 Catlins Great Escape

This unique bike journey was held on the 15th and 16th May 2010.

The two day, 100km cycling tour began in Tokanui and headed to Curio Bay via the magical Haldane Reserve. Riding along the magnificent rugged coastline and impressive old-growth rainforests guests  arrived and stayed overnight at Tautuku Outdoor Education Centre. The next day’s ride took participants through the isolated communities of Puketiro and Tawanui before heading into Owaka.

The Catlins laid on two days of beautiful weather for the Great Escape bike ride at the weekend. Tourism Catlins Project Co-ordinator Kim Dodds said the event was really successful, with about 50 people aged between 15 and 68 entering the main ride.

Adraian Stott of Owaka received a free entry to next years ride for being the last person to enter. She made the decision 24 hours before the race started. “I’d been really busy and I hadn’t done any training, so I’d been putting it off” .Her lack of training caught up with her at the 60km point. “I was very sore yesterday”, she said. Mrs Stott also won the main prize of a Bauer Bike and Helmet for her effort.

Jocelyn Paterson of Queenstown had not done much training for the event either. “I was a bit sore on Saturday night. There were a few sore bottoms”.  Ms Paterson said she was in the last four for most of the race, which didn’t matter, because “it was not a race – it’s an event to enjoy”. “You meet some awesome people. We stopped off at different places and took photos. “It was so much fun”.

The riders visited several Catlin’s landmarks, including Curio Bay, Tautuku and Papatowai.

Mrs Dodds said there were big plans for next year’s event, and she was hoping to announce the race format and route for the 2011 race next month.
