Day 1

  • Breakfast on the beach at Kaka Point.
  •  
  • Kaka Point bushwalk – located by camping ground.
  •  
  • Tunnel Hill – Hand built railway tunnel from the 1800s. Torch required.
  •  
  • Owaka Museum and Information Centre
  •  
  • Kayak at Pounawea or fish in the estuary – Fishing licences can be sourced from the Owaka Four Square Supermarket.
  •  
  • Pounawea Nature Walk – Information sheet available from the Owaka Museum and Information Centre.
  •  
  • Owaka Heads – explore the Catlins estuary and rock pools (tide dependent).

Day 2

     
  • Surat Bay – early morning visit to see the New Zealand sea lions. Check tide times at the Owaka Museum and Information Centre.

  • Catlins River Walk – at The Wisp end of the track there are 2 swing bridges, one quite early in the walk. 
  •  
  • Lunch at The Wisp – take a fishing rod as the Catlins River follows the walk and is good for fishing.
      Fishing licences available from the Owaka Four Square Supermarket.
  •  
  • Purakaunui Bay – for an afternoon barbeque or picnic. Great surf and body-boarding beach.
  •  
  • Long Point – just a short drive further on from Purakaunui Bay. A good place for fishing from the rocks.

Day 3

     
  • Purakaunui Falls – a short walk to one of the most photographed attractions in the Catlins.
  •  
  • Old Coach Road Track – a short walk to the beach, or for a longer walk follow the track to Tahakopa Bay. Check tide times for the longer walk.
  •  
  • Papatowai
  •  
  • Cycle to Picnic Point. Take the short walk to King’s Rock or explore Shank’s Bush Walk. Visit the Lost Gypsy Gallery.
  •  
  • Fish in the estuary or from the rocks at Papatowai Beach.

Day 4

     
  • Tautuku Beach – take the short drive to the beach, or park your vehicle on the Southern Scenic Route and take the beach access walk. Go for a run along Tautuku Beach. Photo by Terry Johnson

  • Tautuku Board Walk – visit the estuary and you may see the rare fernbird.
  •  
  • Cathedral Caves – check the tide times at the Owaka Museum and Information Centre.

  • McLean Falls – In the evening you may see glow worms on the last part of the track near the top of the falls. Torches required.

Day 5

     
  • Niagara Falls – view from above the bridge at Niagara.
  •  
  • Waikawa Museum and Information Centre
  •  
  • Surf or swim at Porpoise Bay – you may also see the rare Hector’s dolphins in the surf.
  •  
  • Curio Bay – visit the fossilised forest – approximately 160 million years old.
  •  
  • View penguins at Curio Bay at dawn or dusk .

Day 6

  • Slope Point – the southernmost point of the South Island.
  •  
  • Waipapa Point and Waipapa Point lighthouse – location of New Zealand’s worst civilian maritime disaster in 1881, the “Tararua,” with the loss of 131 lives.
  •  
  • Fortrose – at low tide the wreck of the “Ino” is visible. It was wrecked in 1886 .
