Kaka Point area

Kaka Point  -  Sun, Sand and Scenery – an adventure playground in an unspoiled natural environment.

Tunnel Hill - Historic railway tunnel built in the late 1800s. Torch required.

Owaka Area

Jack’s Blowhole  - Scenic easy walk 1 hour return. Open all year around. Ideal sea conditions required to see blowhole in action.

Owaka - An excellent base for exploring The Catlins.
Pounawea - Nature lovers will find so much to do and see in this picturesque tranquil location in the heart of The Catlins.

Sea Lions

Surat Bay - A short distance from Owaka. A great place for a walk along a long sandy beach with beautiful views across an inslet to Pounawea. Named after the sailing vessel Surat, wrecked in 1874. Sea lions often seen here. Camping Ground.

Catlins River Walk - Includes two 12 km routes, The Catlins River Walk and Wisp Loop Walk. At The Wisp end of the track there are 2 swing bridges, one quite early in the walk. Take a fishing rod as the Catlins River follows the walk and is good for fishing.

Tawanui - Picnicing,Walks and Camping ground.

Purakaunui Bay - Great for an afternoon barbeque or picnic. Great surf and body-boarding beach. DOC camp site.

Long Point - Just a short drive further on from Purakaunui Bay. A good place for fishing from the rocks.

Matai Falls and Rail Trail Walk - Matai Falls 30 minutes return. Rail Trail 1 hour return.

Papatowai Area

Papatowai - A special place rich in natural and human history. A place to stop and stretch the legs and admire a view where the rainforest meets the ocean.

Tautuku Area
Tautuku Estuary Boardwalk

Tautuku Boardwalk - Visit the estuary and you may see the rare fernbird.

Tautuku Beach - Take the short drive to the beach, or park your vehicle on the Southern Scenic Route and take the beach access walk.

Lake Wilkie

Lake Wilkie - Reflective and peaceful. 30 minute return walk. Stunning flowering rata to be seen in summer.


Tokanui - The hub of the South Catlins. A place to recharge, refuel and then continue your journey.

Waikawa Wharf

Waikawa - Relax and enjoy the peaceful beauty of this small, attractive settlement. On a still, fine evening reflections on the harbour make perfect photographic opportunities.

Niagara Falls - Short walk to the small Niagara Falls.

Fortrose  - Fantastic sunsets over the estuary are just one of the highlights of Fortrose - the  southern gateway to The Catlins coastal route.

Waipohatu  - A tranquil picnic area. 20 minute return wheelchair bush track. Longer 3 hour waterfall wilderness loop track.
